Small picturesque cascades formed where the Rinehart and Trout Brooks tumble into the Black River in Hacklebarney State Park near Long Valley. The falls are viewed from the park's Riverside and other trails through a rocky, hemlock-shaded gorge; exact drop heights are not documented.
Its water comes from Black River. You'll find it in Morris, New Jersey. It is protected within New Jersey DEP (Hacklebarney State Park).
This is a short hike waterfall: reached by a short trail, generally under about a mile each way. A short walk gets you to the viewpoint, so it works for most casual visitors and families. The walk to the main viewpoint runs about 1.78 miles round trip. Base a visit out of Long Valley, the closest town.
When to go: spring. Like most waterfalls, Hacklebarney Falls runs highest after snowmelt or heavy rain and can thin out in late summer, so it's worth checking recent streamflow and the land manager's conditions page before a long drive.
