Hanakoa Falls is a tall, multi-tiered waterfall set back in Hanakoa Valley along the Nā Pali Coast of Kauaʻi. Reaching it requires roughly a 14-mile round-trip trek on the strenuous Kalalau Trail (plus a short spur), typically done with an overnight permit at the Hanakoa or Kalalau campsites.
Hanakoa Falls sits on Hanakoa Stream. It lies in Kauai, Hawaii. The site is on public land managed by Hawaii DLNR Division of State Parks (Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park).
This is a backcountry waterfall: a remote, long, or permit-required trek for prepared visitors. This one is deep enough in that you should plan for a full backcountry trip — map, water, and a margin of daylight. The walk to the main viewpoint runs about 14 miles round trip. The nearest town is Hāʻena.
When to go: summer. Flow usually peaks after snowmelt and heavy rain and tapers through late summer — a quick look at recent streamflow and the managing agency's conditions page can save a wasted trip.
